COMMUNITY STUDY IN MANKON
HEALTH AREA FROM 19 TO 21 JANUARY 2017

Miss Kerline was a volunteer who was sent to CAPITOL to have some experience
in Public Health by the ‘Agence du Service Civique National de Participation au Development’ (ASCNPD)
which is an national institution responsible for the mobilisation of resources in view of the promotion of the economic, social et
cultural development of the country and of the promotion in all the Cameroonians
the national and patriotic spirit, and the dignity of work.
The proprietor of CAPITOL, Mr Ngalah Edward approved that she should
perform community health internship in Mankon Health Area that consisted of
collecting data from households for three days and analysing the data using the
software developed for the purpose.
GENERAL OBJECTIVE (GOAL): Make
a community diagnosis of health problems and health risk factors in Mankon
Health Area by studying the environmental sanitation of households and
health problems in households in the health area and study the vaccination
coverage rate of children 0 – 23 month.
METHOD:
The data collection in the community was carried out by a team of three
persons: Miss Kerline, Her bilingual friend, and the community mobiliser. The
data collection took place in the Ntingkag zone on 19/01/2017, in the KikVung
zone on 20/01/2017 and in Ntambeng zone on 21/01/2017 using the questionnaires
on environmental sanitation and on evaluation of vaccination coverage rate in
children 0-23 months in 10 households in each zone. Only households having
children 0-23 months were chosen. Data collection started as early 06 hours in
the morning in order to meet the mothers of children at home. The data on
vaccination was obtained from the vaccination cards of children.
DISCUSSION:
Although the sample for the study was small, the analysis of the data
collected provided some pertinent information that should be used to promote the
health of the population.
Although only 30 households were studied from the three zones of Mankon Health
Area we thought that it was necessary to analyse the data collected and write a
report in order to have some information to educate the population pending an
occasion when a more elaborate study would be carried in the health area.
This study was a good learning experience for the volunteer who showed
an excellent enthusiasm in carrying out the study at all levels. The tools used
in this study have been included so that such a study can be carried out elsewhere.
The English version of this report was written by Dr Mfonfu Daniel. This
study shows an excellent attitude of transferring knowledge to the younger
generation.
